‖ lagophthalmus Path.|ˌlægəfˈθælməs| [mod.L., ad. Gr. λαγώϕθαλµος adj. ‘hare-eyed’ (i.e. unable to close the eyes, as the hare was supposed to be), f. λαγώς hare + ὀϕθαλµός eye. The disease is called by Galen τὸ λαγώϕθαλµον.] A morbid condition, in which the eye remains wide open. Also called ‖ lagophˈthalmia, and in anglicized form † lagophˈthalmy. Hence lagophˈthalmic a., pertaining to, or affected with, lagophthalmus.
