A tree, Pongamia glabra, family Leguminosæ, widely diffused from India to China and N. Australia; its seeds yield Kurung oil, much used in India for illuminating purposes.
1866Treas. Bot. 919/1 In India, an oil, called Kurunj, or Poonga oil, is expressed from the seeds. 1883–4Med. Annual 48/1 Kurung Oil is obtained from the seeds of a leguminous tree common in most parts of India. |
