单词 Kosovar
释义 Kosovar, n. and a.
Brit. |ˈkɒsəvɑː|, U.S. |ˈkɔsəˌvɑr|, |ˈkɑsəˌvɑr|
Forms: 19– Kosovar, 19– Kossovar
[‹ Albanian kosovar Kosovë (definite form Kosova), the name of the region (‹ Serbian Kosovo, use as noun of neuter possessive adjective in Kosovo polje: see note below) + -ar, suffix denoting an inhabitant of a place.
The region takes its name from the plain of Kosovo (Albanian Fusha e Kosovës, Serbian Kosovo polje), an extensive plateau to the north and south of Prishtina (Priština in Serbian), on which a famous battle took place in 1389 between the Turks and the Serbs (the latter allied with Hungarians, Albanians, and others). The literal meaning of Serbian Kosovo polje ‘field of the blackbird(s)’ (‹ kosovo blackbird's, blackbirds' (‹ kos blackbird + -ovo, neuter suffix forming adjectives indicating possession) + polje field), is reflected in post-classical Latin Merulae campus (also Merlinius campus), German Amselfeld, Hungarian Rigómezö, used with reference to the battle-site.]
