a. A native or inhabitant of the ancient kingdom of Khmer in south-east Asia, which reached the peak of its power in the 11th century and was destroyed by Siamese conquests in the 12th and 14th centuries; also (from 1863) such a person in Cambodia; subsequently, a native or inhabitant of the Khmer Republic (established 1970).
b. The monosyllabic language of this people, belonging to the Mon-Khmer group of the Austro-Asiatic family.
