ketosis Med.|kɪˈtəʊsɪs| [f. keto- + -osis.] A condition characterized by an increased production of ketone bodies, which is associated with a predominance of fat metabolism and with diabetes.
1917F. M. Allen in Amer. Jrnl. Med. Sci. CLIII. 335 No other name but acidosis exists for the metabolic process which it denotes. Ketonuria and ketonemia have their accurate place but do not cover the ground. Possibly the word ketosis might be suggested and used for special purposes, but the change of established usage would be difficult and seems unnecessary. 1925Biochem. Jrnl. XIX. 948 In man after a relatively short period of starvation..a considerable ketosis appears. 1951A. Grollman Pharmacol. & Therapeutics vii. 151 The paroxysmal cerebral dysrhythmia characteristic of epilepsy may be altered by inducing ketosis by a low carbohydrate, high fat diet. 1960Farmer & Stockbreeder 22 Mar. 136/1 There does appear to be a connection between the heavy feeding of kale, and the incidence of ketosis (acetonæmia), but in rather a roundabout way. 1961[see acetone]. 1970R. W. McGilvery Biochem. xxii. 530 However, the meat-fat diet does cause the appearance of an asymptomatic ketosis. Hence keˈtotic a., suffering from or associated with ketosis.
1943Jrnl. Amer. Med. Assoc. 2 Jan. 52/2 During episodes of ketotic acidosis it was necessary to give 2,360, 2,500 and 2,795 units of insulin in twenty-four hours before adequate control was accomplished. 1959Jrnl. Appl. Physiol. XIV. 1028/1 The turnover time was increased also by about 1/5 in the ketotic cows. 1961L. Martin Clin. Endocrinol. (ed. 3) ii. 52 Uncontrolled diabetics with high blood sugar levels do not as a rule suffer from anorexia unless they are also ketotic. 1972Jrnl. Clin. Invest. LI. 1440/1 The cause of ketotic hypoglycemia, the commonest form of hypoglycemia in childhood, is not known. |
