anamesite Min.|əˈnæmɪsaɪt| [ad. G. anamesit (K. C. von Leonhard Die Basalt-Gebilde (1832) I. 150), f. Gr. ἀνάµεσος intermediate + -ite1.] A fine-grained variety of basalt.
1876P. H. Lawrence tr. B. von Cotta's Rocks Classified ii. i. 135 Basaltic Rocks..a fine-grained dark grey to black mass, in which we are unable to distinguish between labradorite and augite. This fine-grained variety has been specially named by von Leonhard as Anamesite. Ibid. 136 The different stages of compactness of texture may be typified by the three names Dobrite, Anamesite, Basalt. 1879Rutley Stud. Rocks xiii. 253 Those [basalts] in which the constituents are too small to be recognised without a magnifying power, but in which a crystalline texture is yet clearly discernible, are styled anamesites. 1937A.
