amyelia, n. Path.|ˌeɪmaɪˈiːlɪə| [f. Gr. ἀµύελος without marrow: + -ia1; cf. a- 14, myelin n.1] Congenital absence of the spinal cord.
1865Med. Press (Dublin) XI. 435/2 The appearance of the spinal nerves at the neural foramina in the absence of the spinal cord (amyelia) has been remarked. 1897Gould & Pyle Anomalies & Curiosities Med. vi. 281 Foot records a case of amyelia, or absence of the spinal cord, in a fetus with hernia cerebri and complete fissure of the spinal column. 1927Anatomical Rec. XXXVI. 310 The literature does not supply many cases of anencephaly or amyelia in very young embryos. 1979Virchows Archiv A.
