prolan Physiol.|ˈprəʊlæn| [a. G. prolan (B. Zondek 1929, in Zeitschr. f. Geburtshülfe u. Gynäkologie XCV. 363), f. L. prōl-ēs progeny: see -an.] The name given to what was formerly thought to be one female sex hormone but is now known to comprise both follicle-stimulating hormone (prolan A) and luteinizing hormone (prolan B).
1931Biol. Abstr. V. 1357/2 The hormone of the anterior lobe of the pituitary body, called prolan, is an activator of the {female} sex gland. 1936Brit. Med.
