Participation in this counter-culture is freq. characterized by the adoption of idiosyncratic spelling conventions (such as the use of -z to denote plural forms, the substitution of the digit 0 for the letter o, etc.; see quot. 1992). The etymology proposed in quot. 1995 is probably a later rationalization.]
Illegal copies of commercial software, pornographic images, etc., distributed through computer bulletin boards or Internet sites; a counter-culture centred on the distribution of this software, and the online discussion of such activities.
