intussusceptum Med.|ˌɪntəssəˈsɛptəm| [mod.L., neut. sing. of intussusceptus: see intussuscept v.] The middle and the innermost tubes of intestine (taken together) of the three present in an intussusception; also (less commonly), the innermost tube alone.
1857Dunglison Dict. Med. Sci. (rev. ed.) 507/2 It [sc. intussusceptio] means the introduction of one part of the intestinal canal—intussusceptum—into another, which serves it as a sort of vagina or sheath. Generally, it is the upper part of the small intestine, which is received into the lower—intussuscipiens—when the intussusception is said to be progressive. 1884F. Treves Intestinal Obstructions viii. 168 The external of the three layers is known as the intussuscipiens, the sheath, or the receiving layer... The innermost cylinder is known as the entering layer..and the middle one as the returning layer... Taken together, these two layers form the intussusceptum. 1960Jones & Gummer Clin. Gastroenterol. iii. 93 An intussusception when fully developed is made up of three layers of intestine. The innermost or entering portion of the gut is called the intussusceptum... The middle or returning layer..is referred to as the resceptum and the outermost or ensheathing layer is the intussuscipiens. 1965Lumsden & Truelove Radiol. Digestive Syst. xv. 497 The barium may penetrate between the intussuscipiens and the intussusceptum, thus outlining the apex of the intussusceptum. 1970H. M. Spiro Clin. Gastroenterol. xxii. 353/2 Intussusception is the telescoping of the wall of one segment of the bowel into the adjacent distal portion... In formal circles, the invaginated segment is known as the intussusceptum, the receiving segment is the intussuscipiens. |
