The royal name of Shen Zong, emperor of China 1573–1620, used attrib. and absol. with reference to pottery and porcelain made during his reign.
1876Hooper & Phillips Man. Marks on Pott. & Porc. 186 The dark rich blue of the Kea-tching and the white granulated surface of the Wan-leĭh, are very choice. 1885Jrnl. Peking Oriental Soc. I. 98 Plain white cups of Wan li porcelain were several taels of silver each. 1902C. Monkhouse Chinese Porc. i. 36 Some of the blue is fine in colour, as in some pieces which were lent by Mr. William Agnew to the Burlington Fine Arts Club in 1895. One of them has the Wan-li mark. 1915R. L. Hobson Chinese Pott. & Porc. II. v. 66 Another group of marked Wan Li ware, comprising bowls and dishes with trim neat finish..has a soft-looking glaze. 1960H. Hayward Antique Coll. 313/2 Wu ts‘ai (five-colour) wares.
