amniocentesis Obstetrics.|ˌæmnɪəʊsɛnˈtiːsɪs| Pl. -centeses |-ˈiːsiːz|. [f. amnion + Gr. κέντησις pricking (f. κεντεῖν to prick).] A prenatal diagnostic technique in which a sample of amniotic fluid is withdrawn from the uterus through a hollow needle and examined for information about the fœtus; an examination by means of this technique.
