A. adj.
1. Situated or placed between the teeth (of a person or animal, or of a toothed wheel).
1874Knight Dict. Mech., Gear-cutting Machine, one for making cog-wheels by cutting out the interdental material. 1878T. Bryant Pract. Surg. I. 555 Moon's splint therefore seems to be the best interdental one we possess.
2. Phonology. Pronounced by placing the tip of the tongue between the teeth.
1877Sweet Handbk. Phonetics §145 French (t) and (d) are dental, often also interdental. 1887Cook tr. Sievers' O.E. Gram. 104, ð and þ originally denote without distinction the interdental spirant which is now represented in Eng. by th. 1933L. Bloomfield Lang. vi. 98 Contact..can be made against the edges of the upper teeth (interdental position). 1943K. L. Pike Phonetics ii. vii. 123 An interdental sound is one in which the tip of the tongue is placed between the upper and lower teeth.
