vysotskite Min.|viːˈsɒtskaɪt| [ad. Russ. vȳsotskit (Genkin & Zvyagintsev 1962, in Zap. Vsesoyuz. Min. Obshch. XCI. 718), f. the name of N. K. Vysotsky (d. 1932), Russian mineralogist: see -ite1.] A sulphide of palladium and often nickel, (Pd,Ni)S, found as minute silvery tetragonal crystals having a metallic lustre.
1963Chem. Abstr. LVIII. 8777 For the genesis of vysotskite is characteristic the assocn. with Pt ores, pentlandite, millerite, and other sulfides, in effusive andesite-diabase in gabbro-diabase intrusions. 1978Amer. Mineralogist LXIII. 832/1 Vysotskite has since been reported..from the Stillwater Complex of Montana..and the Lac des Isles deposit, Ontario. Ibid. 838/1 We conclude that braggite and vysotskite are simply compositional variants of the same phase, (Pd,Pt,Ni)S... We suggest that the family of minerals be called the braggite series and that all compositions containing less than 10 mole percent PtS be called vysotskite. |
