integraph|ˈɪntɪgrɑːf, -æ-| [ad. F. intégraphe (B. Abdank-Abakanowicz 1885, in La Lumière électr. 17 Oct. 111/1), f. intégral integral a. and n., intégrer to integrate v.: see -graph.] Any of various kinds of apparatus which mechanically draw a curve representing the variation in the integral of some given curve or function as a limit or parameter varies.
1885Min. Proc. Inst. Civil Engin. LXXXII. 162 The machines that he [sc. B. Abdank-Abakanowicz] had called briefly ‘Integraphs’ traced these curves mechanically. 1902Encycl. Brit. XXX. 582/1 While an integrator determines the value of a definite integral, hence a mere constant, an integraph gives the value of an indefinite integral, which is a function of x. 1927Jrnl. Franklin Inst. CCIII. 64 Mechanical integrators usually evaluate the definite integral between given fixed limits... The present machine, which we have called an integraph, since it records the result of an integration in the form of a plot or graph, has therefore been developed to evaluate F(x) against x from the expression F(x) = ∫xa f1(x)f2(x)dx where f1 and f2 are known functions, formal or empirical. 1931Ibid. CCXII. 77 The Photo-Electric Integraph..extends the range of practical solution of mathematical problems through its usefulness in the evaluation of integrals having a variable parameter within the integrand. 1961S. Fifer Analogue Computation IV. xxv. 968 The development of the harmonic analyzer is closely associated with the development of two devices, (1) the planimeter,..and (2) the integraph, which draws a graph of the indefinite integral of a function. |
