Modern name of inosite: any of the nine stereoisomers of hexahydroxycyclohexane, (CHOH)6; spec. that isomer (also called meso-inositol or myoinositol) which is a member of the vitamin B complex, occurs in many animal organs esp. muscle and (often as its hexaphosphate) in plant leaves and seeds, and promotes the growth of bacteria and yeasts.

III. 214 Inositol forms large transparent monosymmetric crystals, which possess a sweet taste and are soluble..in about 6 parts of water, yielding an optically inactive solution. 1936A. P. Mathews Princ. Biochem. v. 69 Inositol is found in wheat bran and in many vegetables, where it occurs often in the form of ‘phytin’, which is the hexa-phosphoric acid-ester of inositol. 1941Jrnl.
