vitalism Biol.|ˈvaɪtəlɪz(ə)m| [a. F. vitalisme, or independently f. vital a. + -ism.] The doctrine or theory that the origin and phenomena of life are due to or produced by a vital principle, as distinct from a purely chemical or physical force.
