[ad. med.L. infirmāria, f. infirmus infirm a.: see -ary1 B. 3. The obs. forms perh. repr. F. infirmerie (earlier enfermerie, etc.) = Sp. enfermeria, It. infermeria. The ME. aphetized form was fermery, q.v.]
1. A building or part of a building for the treatment of the sick or wounded; a hospital; esp. the sick-quarters in a religious establishment, a school, workhouse, or other institution.
In the 18th c., the common name for a public hospital: see hospital n. 3. Nearly all such institutions in English provincial towns had originally this name, which is still retained in many cases, e.g. the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, the Royal Infirmary, Liverpool, the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, etc.
