progenote, n. Microbiol.|prəʊˈdʒiːnəʊt| [f. pro-2 + gene n. + -ote after prokaryote n.] The hypothetical ancestor of all prokaryotes and higher organisms, being supposedly either a single cell, a simpler biochemical entity, or one of a small number of either of these.
1977Woese & Fox in Jrnl. Molecular Evol. X. 3 Such organisms would necessarily be on a level of complexity far simpler than the procaryotic. Organism[s] of this type, in the throes of evolving the genotype-phenotype relationship, are properly designated progenotes. 1986M. Kogut tr. Schlegel's Gen. Microbiol. iii. 84 It is thought that the archaebacteria and the eubacteria both developed from primordial cells called progenotes. 1988Nature 14 Jan. 111/3 The metabolic properties of the original cell (the progenote) are not specified in this method. |
