Vela, n. Astron. Brit. |ˈviːlə|, U.S. |ˈvilə| [‹ post-classical Latin Vela, spec. use (after French voilure (adopted as the name of the constellation by N. L. de La Caille 1752, in Mém. de l'Acad. Royale des Sci. (1756) 590)) of classical Latin vela, plural of velum sail (see velum n.).] (The name of) a large, fairly conspicuous constellation of the southern hemisphere, lying partly in the Milky Way between Centaurus and Carina; the Sails. Also (in form Velorum) used as postmodifier in the names of stars belonging to this constellation. Abbreviated Vel (no point). Formed, along with Carina, Puppis, and Pyxis, from the splitting of the former constellation Argo in the 19th cent.
