‖ varella Obs. Pl. -ellaes, -ely. [Pg. and It. varella, -ela (16th cent.), of doubtful origin.] A pagoda.
1588T. Hickock tr. Frederick's Voy. 33 b, They spend many of these Sugar canes in making of houses and tents which they call Varely for their Idoles. 1599Hakluyt Voy. II. i. 260 They consume in these Varellaes great quantity of golde; for that they be all gilded aloft. 1638Sir T. Herbert Trav.
