ijolite Petrogr.|ˈiːjəʊlaɪt| [ad. G. ijolith (Ramsay & Berghell 1891, in Geol. Fören. i Stockholm Förh. XIII. 304), f. Ijo, Sw. rendering of Finnish Ii, the name of a village and district on the Finnish coast near Oulu and also the initial element in the names of local geographic features, as Iijärvi, Iijoki, Iivaara: see -lite.] A plutonic igneous rock consisting essentially of nepheline and pyroxene and containing no felspar.
1897A. Harker Petrol. (ed. 2) 52 The ‘ijolite’ of Ramsay and Berghell from Finland, a nepheline-pyroxene-rock free from felspar but sometimes rich in garnet. 1962W. T. Huang Petrol. iv. 139 Much of the ijolite on Alnö Island, Sweden, and Magnet Cove, Arkansas, contains abundant melanite garnet. Hence ijoˈlitic a., resembling or of the nature of ijolite.
