iguanodon Palæont.|ɪˈgwɑːnədɒn, -æ-| [f. iguana + Gr. ὀδούς, ὀδοντ - tooth, after mastodon, etc. Mantell, in Petrif. & their Teachings (1851) 231–2, states that the name was suggested to him by the Rev. W. D. Conybeare.] A large herbivorous lizard found fossil in the Wealden formation; it was from twenty-five to thirty feet long, and from its teeth and bones is considered to have resembled in many respects the iguana; whence the name.
