altimeter|ˈæltɪmiːtə(r), ælˈtɪmɪtə(r)| [f. L. altimeter (quoted by Ducange from Papias), f. L. alti- high + Gr. µέτρον a measure.] 1. ‘An instrument for taking altitudes geometrically.’ Craig 1847. 2. A form of aneroid barometer which indicates the altitude reached, esp. in aviation.
