ianthinite Min.|iːˈæ-, aɪˈænθɪnəɪt| [ad. Du. janthiniet (A. Schoep 1926, in Natuurwetenschappelijk Tijdschrift VII. 97), f. Gr. ἰάνθῐν-ος violet-coloured: see -ite1.] A hydrated oxide of uranium found as orthorhombic crystals of a dark violet colour.
1927Mineral. Abstr. III. 232 Small (to 2 mm.) black crystals with a violet tinge and semi-metallic lustre were found in veinlets in pitchblende from the Kasolo mine in Katanga, and are named ianthinite. 1954Amer. Mineralogist XXXIX. 1018 Ianthinite reportedly contains only quadrivalent uranium and has a formula of 2UO2.7H2O. |
