hæmanthus, hem- Bot.|hiːˈmænθəs| [mod.L. (Linnæus Hortus Cliffortianus (1737) 127), f. Gr. αἷµ-α blood + ἄνθος flower.] A bulbous plant of the genus so called, belonging to the family Amaryllidaceæ, native to southern and tropical Africa, and bearing umbels of red, pink, or white flowers.
