‖ hälleflinta Min.|hɛləˈflɪntə| [Sw. = horn-stone, f. häll flat rock + flinta hornstone, flint.] A name given to a very fine-grained variety of gneiss, generally free from mica, and resembling felsite.
1878Lawrence tr. Cotta's Rocks Class. 213 Felsite has also received the names of petrosilex, and in Scandinavia hälle-flinta. 1879Rutley Study Rocks xii. 214 Those varieties termed hälleflinte and hornstone having a peculiar flinty aspect. 1880Academy 20 Nov. 370 The Chinese Rocks are allied to hälleflinta. Hence hälleflintoid a., of or like hälleflinta.
