hyposulphurous, a. Chem.|hɪpəʊ-, haɪpəʊˈsʌlfjʊərəs| [f. hypo- 5 + sulphurous.] In hyposulphurous acid: †a. The name originally given to the acid H2S2O3, now called thiosulphuric acid.
1817T. Thomson Chem. (ed. 5) II. 112 Besides the two acid compounds of sulphur and oxygen, (viz. sulphurous and sulphuric acids) we have the fullest evidence of the existence of a third..to which the name of hyposulphurous acid may be given. 1871Roscoe Elem. Chem. 138 Hyposulphurous Acid, or Hydrogen Hyposulphite is not known in the free state. 1894Roscoe & Schorlemmer Chem. I. 412 Thiosulphuric Acid (H2S2O3). This compound is better known under its old name of ‘hyposulphurous acid’, with which name however we now designate the body obtained by the reduction of sulphurous acid. b. Now applied to the acid H2S2O4, containing one atom of oxygen less than sulphurous acid; formerly called hydrosulphurous acid.
1872Watts Dict. Chem. Suppl. VI. 1063 Hyposulphurous Acid, H2SO2 (Hydrosulphurous Acid, Schützenberger)..is produced by the action of zinc on aqueous sulphurous acid. Ibid. 1074 Schützenberger calls his acid hydrosulphurous acid; but it is more consistent with analogy to designate it as hyposulphurous acid. 1877― Fownes' Chem. (ed. 12) I. 213 Hyposulphurous acid is obtained, as a deep orange-coloured strongly bleaching liquid. |
