hyperosmolarity Med.|ˌhaɪpərɒzməʊˈlærɪtɪ| [f. hyper- + osmolarity.] The condition (in a bodily fluid, esp. serum) of having abnormally high osmotic pressure; also, the condition (in an individual) of having such serum.
1947Amer. Jrnl. Dis. Child. LXXIV. 684 The less the ability of the kidney to excrete urine of high solute content, the more readily hyperosmolarity of the body fluid develops. 1958Jrnl. Chronic Dis. VII. 1 The ultimate effect of hyperosmolarity of serum is dehydration of cells. 1963Lancet 20 Apr. 891/1 We saw a patient with marked hyperosmolarity, due to an unusually high plasma-sodium, dehydration, and moderate ketonuria, but no loss of consciousness. 1965Neurology XV. 205/1 Hyperosmolarity secondary to hypernatremia in various clinical states is known to be associated with severe neurological disturbances. So hyperosˈmolar a., of, exhibiting, or associated with hyperosmolarity.
1953Amer. Jrnl. Med. XV. 185/1 After discontinuance of pitressin the hyperosmolar state promptly recurred. 1966Lancet 26 Mar. 679/2 Eight patients with hyperosmolar non-ketoacidotic diabetic coma were new diabetics with an average age of 63 years. 1972Science 19 May 815 Malone et al. stated that severe hyperosmolar dehydration could be responsible for the entire galactose toxicity syndrome. However, we have concluded..that hyperosmolality per se is not the major factor responsible. |
