hypaspist Gr. Antiq.|hɪˈpæspɪst, haɪp-| [ad. Gr. ὑπασπιστής shield-bearer, f. ὑπό hypo- 1 + ἀσπίς shield.] A shield-bearer; one of a distinguished body of troops (to which the foot-guards belonged) in the Macedonian army.
