hydro-pneumatic, a. (n.)|ˌhaɪdrəʊnjuːˈmætɪk| [f. hydro- a + pneumatic: in F. hydro-pneumatique.] Pertaining to water and air or gas; applied to apparatus involving the combined action of water and air. Originally applied to the method of collecting and retaining gas over water in the pneumatic trough, invented by Cavendish about 1765.
