hydnocarpus Bot.|hɪdnəʊˈkɑːpəs| [mod.L. (J. Gaertner De Fructibus et Seminibus Plantarum (1788) I. 288), f. Gr. ὕδνον truffle + καρπός fruit, from the resemblance of the fruit to a truffle.] a. A tree of the genus so called, belonging to the family Flacourtiaceæ and native to tropical Asia.

Indian Forest Bot. 145 In Hydnocarpus the fruits are produced on the branches. b. attrib., as hydnocarpus therapy; hydnocarpus oil, a yellowish oil or soft cream-coloured fat obtained from the seeds of trees of the genus Hydnocarpus, esp. H. wightiana and H. anthelminthica, and used, formerly extensively, in the treatment of leprosy.
