‖ Upanayana|upaˈnaːjana| Also Upanayan, Upanayanam. [a. Skr. upanayana, f. upa towards + nayana leading, bringing (f. nī to lead).] An initiation ceremony, one of the rites undergone by Hindu boys of the three higher castes between the ages of eight and sixteen.
1817tr. Dubois' Descr. People of India ii. i. 92 The children of Brahmans are invested with the Cord when they come to the age of seven or nine years... The ceremony..is called Upanayana, or, the Introduction to the Sciences.
