aloe vera,, n. phr.|əˌləʊɪ ˈvɪərə| [f. the mod.L. taxonomic name Aloe vera (Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 320), lit. ‘true aloe’.] An aloe, Aloe vera, native to the Mediterranean and cultivated in the Caribbean, which is a major source of the drug aloes and also yields a gelatinous substance used (esp. in cosmetics) for its emollient and skin-repairing properties; also, the extracted gel itself.
