[An affected alteration of orchard, frequent in 16–17th c., influenced by L. hortus garden. The earliest OE. form was ortᵹeard, whence later orceard, ME. orchard (from c 1200); in 16th c. this was written by some ortyard, after med.L. ortus or It. orto garden, and still later hortyard.]
