hirudin Biochem.|hɪˈruːdɪn| [a. G. her-, hirudin, attributed to Jacobj (see F. Franz 1903, in Arch. f. exper. Path. und Pharm. XLIX. 362), f. L. hirūdo leech + -in1.] An anticoagulant protein produced by the salivary glands of leeches which acts by combining with thrombin in the blood.
