hippeastrum Bot.|hɪpɪˈæstrəm| [mod.L. (see quot. 1821), f. Gr. ἱππεύς horseman, knight + ἄστρον star.] A member of the genus of South American bulbous plants so named, belonging to the family Amaryllidaceæ; the knight's star lily.
