The name of a people, and of their language, of north-west India and Afghanistan.
1815M. Elphinstone Acct. Kingdom of Caubul ii. xii. 309 It has been observed that there is scarcely any part of Afghaunistaun in which the whole population is Afghaun, and that the mixture is composed of Taujiks in the West, and of Hindkees in the East. 1875Encycl. Brit. I. 235/2 Hindkis. This is the name given to people of Hindu descent scattered over Afghanistan. This modification of the name is applied to people of Indian descent, but converted to Islam, on the Peshawar frontier, and scattered over other parts of Afghānistān.
