hi-fi|ˈhaɪˈfaɪ| [colloq. abbrev. of high fidelity.] That part of acoustics and electronics that deals with the design, construction, and use of equipment for the recording and reproduction of sound to a fairly high standard. Also attrib. or as adj., esp. hi-fi equipment, set, system, equipment for the home designed to reproduce (and sometimes to record) sound to such a standard, consisting often of several distinct units. Also ellipt. for hi-fi equipment, etc.
