heteronuclear, a.|ˌhɛtərəʊˈnjuːklɪə(r)| [f. hetero- + nuclear a.] a. Chem. Taking place on different rings in a polycyclic molecule.
1900E. F. Smith tr. V. von Richter's Org. Chem. (ed. 3) II. 390 It can first be ascertained whether the substituents are in the same nucleus (isonuclear) or in different nuclei (heteronuclear). 1951I. L. Finar Org. Chem. I. xxix. 586 When NO2 or SO3H is in the 1- or 2-position, heteronuclear substitution occurs in position 5 or 8. b. Physics and Chem. Of a molecule: composed of atoms whose nuclei are unlike, i.e. atoms of different elements or of different isotopes of the same element.
1930Physical Rev. XXXVI. 617 The words even and odd are applied..to the complete ψ function of any molecule, homonuclear or heteronuclear. 1940Ibid. LVII. 684/2 The HD molecule is heteronuclear and there is no quantum number of total spin. 1950J. W. T. Spinks tr. Herzberg's Molecular Spectra & Molecular Structure (ed. 2) I. iii. 94 This agrees with the observed infrared spectrum of HCl..and of other heteronuclear molecules. |
