[ad. G. heterogenit (A. Frenzel 1872, in Jrnl. f. prakt. Chem. V. 404), f. Gr. ἑτερογεν-ής of different kinds, in allusion to the fact that the mineral differs in composition from some manganese oxides, which it outwardly resembles: see -ite1.]
A name applied to various hydrous oxides of cobalt.
1872Jrnl. Chem. Soc. XXV. 991 Heterogenite is a product of the decomposition of smaltine or tin-white cobalt (speiss-kobalt). 1922Amer. Mineralogist VII. 195 It is therefore recommended that the prior name heterogenite be applied to all cobalto-cobaltic hydroxides, of varying purity. 1962Mineral. Mag. XXXIII. 258 Of the many names proposed for natural cobaltic hydroxide, heterogenite has a clear priority over transvaalite, stainierite, mindigite, trieuite, and boodtite. Heubachite is a nickelian and schulzenite a cuprian heterogenite. |
