[ad. med.L. hēsychasta, ad. eccl. Gr. ἡσυχαστής quietist, hermit, f. ἡσυχάζειν to be still, keep quiet, f. ἥσυχος still, quiet.]
One of a school of quietists which arose among the monks of Mount Athos in the 14th century. Also attrib. So Hesychasm |ˈhɛsɪkæz(ə)m|, the doctrine or practice of Hesychasts.
