heliotropin Chem.|hiːlɪəʊˈtrəʊpɪn| Also -ine. [f. heliotrope 1: see -in1.] A colourless crystalline compound, C8H6O3, present in the heliotrope and other plants, that has a strong smell of heliotropes and is made synthetically for use in perfumes. Also called piperonal.
