hegemonic, a. and n.|hɛdʒɪˈmɒnɪk, hiːg-| [ad. Gr. ἡγεµονικός capable of command, leading, authoritative, ἡγεµονικόν, neut. used subst., authoritative principle, f. ἡγεµών leader, chief.] A. adj. Ruling, supreme. hegemonic functions, ‘the functions of the highest value in the animal economy’ (Syd. Soc. Lex.).
