† ˈhebenon, hebon, hebona Names given by Shakespeare and Marlowe to some substance having a poisonous juice. Commentators have variously identified the word with ebon, henbane, and Ger. eibe, eibenbaum the yew. Gower has hebenus app. in a similar sense.
