Hasmonean, n. and a.|hæzməʊˈniːən| Also Ash-, -æan, Asmonean, -æan. [f. mod.L. Asmōnæus, f. ἀσαµωναῖος (Josephus) = ḥašmōnây, name of the reputed grandfather of Mattathias.] A. n. A member of a Jewish dynasty or family to which the Maccabees belonged. B. adj. Of or pertaining to this dynasty.
