So are they called, who after four years standing in the University, stay themselves from commencing Bachelors of Arts, to render them..more capable of preferment. Several reasons are assigned of their name..The truth is this, in the reign of King Henry the eighth, after the destruction of Monasteries, learning was at a loss, and the University..stood at a gaze what would become of her. Hereupon many Students staid themselves, two, three, some four years, as who would see, how their degrees, (before they took them) should be rewarded and maintained.1795Gentl. Mag. 20 (Farmer) A Harry, or errant Soph..is one who, having kept all the terms, by statute required previous to his law-act, is hoc ipso facto entitled to wear the same garment, and, thenceforth, ranks as batchelor, by courtesy.1852Cambridge Univ. Cal. 38 A student who has declared for Law or Physic, may put on a full-sleeved gown, when those of the same year, who go out at the regular time, have taken their degree of Bachelor of Arts. He is then styled a Harry-Soph (ερισοϕος).
