ˈhand-line
1. A line to be worked or drawn by hand; esp. a fishing line worked without a rod.
1674N. Cox Gentl. Recreat. iii. (1677) 20 Fasten your Hand-lines or drawing Cords, which must be at the least a dozen, a fathom long. 1766Pennant Zool. (1776) I. 343 (Jod.) The same rapidity of tide prevents their using hand⁓lines. 1895Oracle Encycl. II. 105 The fishery is carried on by hand-lines..the bait being cuttlefishes, shell-fishes, etc.
2. Naut. ‘A line bent to the hand-lead, measured at certain intervals with what are called marks and deeps from 2 and 3 fathoms to 20’ (Sailor's Word-bk.).
