Hamas, n. Brit. |haˈmas|, U.S. |hɑˈmɑs| [‹ Arabic Ḥamās > n.) as in the official name of the organization, Ḥarakat al-Muqāwama al-Islāmiyya Islamic Resistance Movement, punningly after ḥamās valour, gallantry, zealotry (popularly connoting rigorous resistance and military activism); compare ḥamāsa zeal, enthusiasm, martial valour. The m may have come to be regarded by some Arabs as standing for Arabic musallaḥa armed in al-Ḥaraka al-Musallaḥa al-Islāmiyya The Islamic Armed Movement.] The common name for: the Islamic Resistance Movement, a militant Islamic organization in the Middle East, founded in 1987 with the aim of establishing a Palestinian state incorporating present-day Israel and the West Bank. Established as a wing of the pan-Arab Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas became the focus of Arab resistance in the Israeli-occupied territories. Its 1988 Covenant views Palestinian nationalism as part of Islamic ideology, and sets out its opposition to negotiations with Israel or any third party.
