Gurmukhi|ˈgʊəmʊkɪ| Also Gurumukhi. [Punjabi, f. Skr. guru teacher + mukha mouth.] The alphabet used for writing the Punjabi language; also, the language of the Punjab. Also attrib. or as adj.
1888M. H. Court in Hist. of Sikhs p. iv, I..have added a reverse index in English to enable a word to be easily found, if required, in translating English into Gurmukhí. At the commencement of the grammar, I have given the alphabet in the Gurmukhí character. 1907G. A. Grierson in Imp. Gazetteer India (ed. 3) I. 369 An improved, and legible, form of Landā is known as Gurmukhī. This was invented about three hundred years ago for writing the Sikh scriptures, and is now the character in ordinary use for printing. 1909Westm.
